Discusses 2 recent theoretical approaches that provide a useful framework for considering the impact of adolescent parenthood on families and the possibilities for intervention: the ecological and family systems approaches. Both approaches permit a consideration of change in various family members, brought about by a teenage birth. The life courses of 3 family members, the teenage mother, her child, and her own mother, are considered to explicate how change co-occurs. Intervention programs that attempt to change the lives of families with teenage mothers are discussed as exemplars of current approaches.
