PSC Tech Tips Fall 2008The PSC Tech Tips sessions will begin on Mondays at 1:10 PM in McNeil 103 just after the PSC Colloquia. The Tech Tips session will take no more than 15 minutes including presentation and questions. This will leave us with 5 minutes to clear the room in a timely manner for the next class. Presentations will be made available online. A handout covering key aspects presented will be distributed. The presenters will be available on a one on one basis as necessary to answer any additional questions you may about the information presented.

September 15, 2008 "The NIH Public Access Policy & You" Description: The NIH Public Access Policy requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that arise from NIH funds to the digital archive PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication and requires that these papers be made available no later than 12 months after publication. September 22, 2008 "How to launch the GUI version of Stata on Linux" Description: The Linux server is running Stata-SE and Stata-MP. Linux provides both a command line interface for running programs and a graphic user interface. The command-line interface is for running programs in batch. The graphical interface for Linux is similar to Stata for Windows and is for developing programs or examining data. Handout

October 6, 2008 "How to copy files via SSH" Description: SSH is a protocol for securely copying files through encrypted tunnels. The session will cover: What is SSH and SFTP; How to launch FileZilla and WinSCP; and How to use a proxy server to copy files from off campus with WinSCP. Handout

October 27, 2008 "How to Create PDFs for free plus a few other PDF tips" Description: This session will show how to use freeware tools to create PDFs, how to modify PDF meta tags that summarize the document and list the author(s) and how to prevent a PDF from being modified without permission.
November 3, 2008 "Create a Website for free Online" Description: Use free online software to create a personal website in minutes – no programming required.
November 10, 2008 "How to read RSS feeds in Firefox and Thunderbird" Description: RSS is a way to get news or announcements from online resources. You subscribe to RSS feeds for content that interests you and pre-organized updates are sent and archived for you via Firefox and Thunderbird.
November 17, 2008 "Using Google Reader to get tailored News" Description: Get all of your favorite web content delivered to one place, so you don’t have to repeatedly visit several webs site to get updates.
November 24, 2008 "A Couple of Useful Firefox Add-Ons" Description: Add-ons to Firefox greatly enhance the browser. The session will show how to find and install add-ons. The session will also demonstrate two of the more useful add-ons.
December 1, 2008 "Store & Share Bookmarks Online with del.icio.us" Description: Bookmark any site on the Internet, and get to it from anywhere you have Internet access. Share your bookmarks, and get bookmarks in return. Delicious is a social bookmarking service that allows users to tag, save, manage and share web pages from a centralized source.
