An area long associated with the Penn PSC; the passings of E. and F. van de Walle are sad and do mark the end of an era, but there is currently more PSC research in Africa then ever before. Much of it is associated with the Malawi Research Group (Watkins, Kohler, Behrman). This work is related to Jemmott’s HIV/AIDS intervention work in Botswana and South Africa; and to studies by Chao and Pauly in South Africa, on the negative spillover effects of AIDS mortality and morbidity on small businesses and local economies. The African Census Analysis Project (ACAP) (Zuberi) is the world’s largest repository of integrated African micro census data.
