Hannum’s ongoing study of Gansu, China (China Human Capital Porjects) has yielded rich information on the interaction between public and private investment in education and other human capital in a poor region in transition to a market economy. She has chronicled the persistence of gender biases (largely through expectations) and the structural problems facing teachers and schools. She is now joined by Kao in work on the role of migration on children’s schooling. Smith is an authority on the Chinese family planning system and the interaction between this system and data collection and quality. China is one of 3 countries in the comparative twins study (Behrman and Kohler) under Europe, above. Behrman continues NICHD-supported research on policy and family background determinants of early childhood development in the Philippines. Park is beginning work on marital dissolution in Japan and Korea. With Behrman, he is investigating the impact of schooling on life chances in Korea, where assignment mechanisms to schools give useful leverage on inferring causality.
