Valeggia does biodemographic research on fertility and health in populations confronted by globalization (their diets change for the worse) in Argentina, and will be joined by Schurr. Furstenberg and Behrman have collaborative work in preparation in Uruguay and elsewhere in Latin America, and have been instrumental in the formation of a Latin American Family Network (with support from PSC funds). Behrman has a long-term project in Guatemala and is participating in an NIH-funded experimental project on social cohesion and health in indigenous communities in Bolivia, and on evaluating early childhood development programs, with Todd and Wolpin, and new longitudinal data sets in Colombia. These 3 scientists have also been heavily involved in analysis of data in Mexico from the PROGRESA/Oportunidades social experiments, and have recently met with Mexican authorities to consider new multi-level experiments on schooling investments. Soldo has been the NIA R01 PI of the Mexican Health and Aging Survey (MHAS) and has been instrumental in creating a Latin American biomarkers network, for the incorporation of biological data in population-based surveys.
