USC’s College of Letters, Arts & Sciences invites applications for an assistant professor with a research specialization that addresses issues of immigrant integration. The position, beginning in Fall 2009, is part of a university-wide initiative to promote research and teaching on the processes of immigration, settlement, and social transformation. 4.17.08 The Middle East Center is looking for a Graduate Research Assistant for next academic year. You should be an advanced PhD candidate on LOW dissertation tuition, be able to work 20 hours a week, and be somewhat flexible with your schedule to meet the variable organizational needs of the Center. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in the modern Middle East, strong computer skills (including Excel and Dreamweaver or similar web authoring software, and some website and image design skills), and a willingness to complete basic administrative chores cheerfully and efficiently. S/he will be responsible for organizing the Middle East Grad Student Colloquium and be heavily involved in organizing the Works-In-Progress Seminar Series, as well as other publicity and outreach efforts as needed. Since 2005, the Guatemala Health Initiative (GHI) partners with the Hospitalito Atitlán in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala to develop and organize community initiated programs in improving the health of the Atitlán community.
During the summer of 2008, we will conduct field research in public health and anthropology focusing on the Culture and Ecology of Motherhood and Safe Delivery. We aim at three goals:

Goal 1: Implement a coordinated field experience in community based anthropological skills in Atitlán.
Goal 2: Initiate a public health education program and partnership with the Network for Health of Santiago Atitlán..
Goal 3: Develop a formal collaboration with comadronas in Atitlán focused on public and professional education and training to improve maternity care.
