Speaker Biographies

<p>Dr. Norman received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, emphasizing in neuropsychology, from Brigham Young University under the mentorship of Dr. Erin Bigler. He completed the UCSD/VA Medical Center Psychology Internship program in 1995. He then continued research at the VA Medical Center and practiced clinical neuropsychology at Sharp Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center, specializing in cerebrovascular accidents and traumatic brain injuries. Following an NIH funded research postdoctoral internship with Dean Delis, Ph.D., Dr. Norman joined the UC San Diego Psychiatry faculty. He holds a Diplomate in Clinical Neuropsychology from the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology and was an examiner. His clinical work includes epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, stroke, brain tumors, neurodevelopmental injuries, intracarotid amytal procedures (aka Wada procedures), intraoperative brain mapping, and solid organ transplant. His research interests include medical disorders affecting cognitive changes, normative data, and demographic influences on neuropsychological testing. He serves on the Professional Advisory Board for the Epilepsy Foundation of America.</p><p>Dr. Bynum is the Margaret Terpenning Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Research Professor in the Institute of Gerontology, Geriatric Center Associate Director for Health Policy and Research, and a member of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation. She received her medical and public health degrees from Johns Hopkins, did her residency and chief residency at Dartmouth, and completed specialty training in Geriatric Medicine at Johns Hopkins. While on faculty at Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Bynum received prestigious awards from the Robert Wood Johnson Physician Faculty Scholar Program and the National Institute of Aging Beeson Scholar Program. She has been an Atlantic Philanthropies Health &amp; Aging Policy Fellow.&nbsp; At University of Michigan, Dr. Bynum has a robust NIH-funded research program including a NIA Center for Aging and Demography of Alzheimer’s Disease, called the Center to Accelerate Population Research in Alzheimers (CAPRA), for which she is the principal investigator. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Forum on Aging, Disability and Independence and has been a member of two NAM consensus studies and several workshops. Dr. Bynum became Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs for the Department of Internal Medicine in 2021.</p><p><br /></p>

About Us

The Population Studies Center (PSC) at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) was founded in 1962 and stands as an international leader in research and training on the dynamic structure, organization, and health and well-being of human populations. The services that PSC provides have been funded by infrastructure grants awarded by the Population Dynamics Branch at Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) since 1978. The center and its associates are also supported by research grants and contracts awarded by federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation and by private foundations. Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences is the administrative home of the PSC and provides generous dedicated support to the center.
